LOVER’S PLEDGE (Kae Maruya)

It must just be luck of the draw, but the last three BL I’ve reviewed have all pretty much been scored somewhere in the 5-6 range out of 10. It almost makes me not want to give this manga that score just because of that, even though that is how I’d rate this one too. 5 is a “good” score to me, it’s like if it was just average but still had things to like about it. Some may say I am a hard rater, but if you’re a veteran manga reader too you’ve probably also come to realize over time just how good or how bad a manga can be. When I first started reading BL, everything got a good score, because I just didn’t have as much to compare it to – perhaps you were the same?

TITAN’S BRIDE VOL 1 (ITKZ)

So, my friend Shinami gave me this for Christmas, and I have to say, it is one of the most fun and enjoyable Christmas presents I’ve ever gotten, possibly *the* most fun and enjoyable one – and my sister and I got a trampoline once. This is uncensored BL to boot, so it’s like Santa came twice in a row. He has a big sack after all.

And oh boy was this a treat. If the odd premise of a bishounen who we will pretend is 18 getting whisked away to another world and then pile-driven by a comically massive titan cock for 150+ pages doesn’t really appeal to you now, I have a suggestion: it just might not appeal to you yet. The protagonist had the same realization, you know.

SCARLET (Hiro Madarame)

I had planned to finish and review the small pile of Studio Kosen titles I have all in a row so that I can get it over with, but reading that last one was like chewing on a dung-flavored stick of Juicy Fruit and I’m not sure I can handle another one just yet. I need some mouthwash for the brain, if you will. Brainwash I guess? So I picked a random M-rated one-shot off my shelf…I mean, there’s no guarantee it will be good or anything, but it would have to be, idk, fingerpainted by a drunk or something to be worse than Kingdom of Selfish Love.

Scarlet is Hiro Madarame’s debut work, though not the first of hers to be licensed in English (it was preceded by Cute Devil). It has a title story and two side stories, one of which I enjoyed far more than the main story, incidentally. To say the title story is ‘kind of fucked up’ would be one way to put it, as its main plot points include bloody anal rape followed by attempted murder. And they say romance is dead…

Yaoi Apparel: Need a Shirt for That Special Occassion?

It’s 4:00pm and you’re supposed to have dinner with your mom and her new boyfriend in an hour. KISS ALL THE BOYS (Shiuko Kano)

Even if you’re not a fan of Shiuko Kano’s work, it’s hard not to acknowledge her vast contributions to this wild and wonderful niche of ours – she debuted in the mid-90s and has been steadily churning out work ever since then, which surely merits some kind of lifetime achievement prize (a crystal penis statue?). Perhaps she will even join the likes of Ayano Yamane and Hinako Takanaga in the pantheon of BL goddesses one day for dedication to the art of porncraft, on a pedestal where dick-shaped vines gleefully snake up your winged sandals and a statue of a golden ass (!) stands at your side. If nothing else she’s staked her claim in the genre by sheer willpower and steady output of work, since she never really had a blockbuster series in English (Punch Up is stellar, but not on the level of, say, the Finder series). She is also fearless in what she commits to paper, for better or for worse, with a unique style that she has managed to tweak through the years to keep fresh. That’s the top cushion of the sandwich for what I’m about to say, which is that sometimes her stories are so trashy or ridiculous or her characters so unattractive with their weird short haircuts and prominent noses that I just can’t get into it (like Affair for example). BUT, here’s the bottom cushion – with a body of work as large as hers, there’s bound to be some duds mixed in, right? Thankfully, this isn’t one of them.

DOUBLE TROUBLE (Takashi Kanzaki)

I don’t think I’ve read an English-licensed yaoi yet title with a true threesome in it, unless this glass of Cabernet is just affecting my memory at the moment. There are certainly a lot of titles that tease at it but never deliver, often just for fanservice and never intending to. But I can’t recall another book – besides this one – that basically writes a threesome into the plot as the resolution, mentions it multiple times as something all three characters want and plan to do, and then when it’s about to actually happen, the curtain closes and there’s no final act. It’s not that the ending is bad, it’s that there isn’t an ending at all. I couldn’t believe this story was complete, such was the abruptness of this. It’s so absurd, that I feel the need to warn people beforehand. The gleeful, malicious cackle of Lady Blue Balls echoes strongly with this one.

Thankfully, there’s a lot I liked in this sexy school comedy that somewhat made up for it, in the sense that you were promised a slice of cake but given a few stale Oreos instead but you just really want something sweet so whatever.

THE INCREDIBLE KINTARO (Naomi Guren)

I may or may not have gotten this title just to review it. And holy fuck am I glad I did. ‘Speechless’ is a word that often gets attached to a greater number of things than it’s truly worthy of describing, but I think this manga checks that box.

CAN’T WIN WITH YOU (Honami/Takaguchi)
